MASS X TISLOHDANBOYI
A collaboration to raise funds for VOYAGE.
VOYAGE - is a social justice charity that aims to empower marginalised black young people and provide them with the self-awareness and motivation to transform themselves and their communities.
The mission of VOYAGE is to encourage and assist young people bridge the gap between their schools, communities and criminal justice system whilst supporting young people to SUSTAIN successful partnerships and meaningful relationships.
Both being part of the BIPOC community and given current global tensions around racism, we wanted to produce something to give hope and to be used as a beacon to start important conversions.
This pendant design is derived from a still frame of a video where a lone officer in uniform is carrying a loaded firearm (Taken in Lagos, Nigeria) by Tisloh Danboyi. Cast in precious metals, it is a metaphorical embodiment of oppression, the casted image was warped and skewed, making the officer resemble a toy-like character - a proclamation of disempowerment.
The main body of the pendant is accompanied by a prong-set gem positioned specifically on the back of the officer. The gems chosen are said to have metaphysical properties of healing, protection and positivity.
In this way the piece intends to portray a message of healing on the backs (over) of oppression - an important statement with significance in our current time. A black spinel is often regarded as a protective gemstone that repels negativity while at the same time triggers empowerment and inspiration to its bearer whereas a purple amethyst carries energies of protection to help eliminate negative thoughts to calm the mind and soul to help with balance and inner peace.
ALL PROFITS PROCEED TO VOYAGE.
